#CCPipeline: CC Male Members Teach 25 Young Black Boys How to Be Young Philanthropists

Capital Cause was pleased to partner with the Black Man Can Institute to teach 25 young men of color about philanthropy!  To help us meet this important mission, we recruited eight African-American young philanthropists who were willing to participate in a group discussion with the young men.  Questions were administered by Cause Director, Karla Morrison, and Kezia M. Williams, Chair of Capital Cause, but the real dialogue took place when the adult young philanthropists began to discuss how young boys didn’t have to wait until adulthood to begin making change in their communities.

“You mean I don’t have to be rich or famous – like Kevin Hart – to be a philanthropist,” asked Brett, a nine-year old participating in the session.

The male panelists unanimously agreed that it was not necessary to be either rich or famous to be a philanthropist.  Young Philanthropist, Dominic Hawkins stated, “being a philanthropist means loving and giving to someone who needs your time, talent or treasure.”

Young boys participating in the program were called “future philanthropists” when they entered the session.  After a series of activities that involved (a) administering a pop quiz about philanthropy, (b) distributing fake money and pretend hours and asking young boys how they would donate it to a cause, and (c) asking young boys to complete a pledge card, the “future philanthropists” each received badges of honor graduating them to the official title of “young philanthropist.”

Pledge cards will be mailed to the young men of color in 60 days; Capital Cause hopes these cards will remind the boys about their promise to be philanthropists in their communities .

Capital Cause thanks the following gentlemen for participating in this program, and changing the lives of these young men of color:  Dominic Hawkins,  Brandon Frazier, Anthony Hales, Richard Ezike, Travis Mapp, Edward Bempong, Jamarr Brown and Brandon Frame!
