RECAP: Young Philanthropist Dinner – “The Future of Black Philanthropy” | 02.26.14

February 26, 2013 -  Capital Cause hosted our first young philanthropist dinner of the year!  In celebration of Black History Month, Capital Cause invited thought leaders to share their opinion regarding the “Future of Black Philanthropy: the Next 100 Years.”   The purpose of the event was to explore the factors that led to the success or demise of African-American led organizations in the 1960s in order to determine how better to found, manage and scale an African-American led organization over the next 100 years.

Capital Cause chose to name the dinner “The Future of Black Philanthropy” after discovering the article entitled “Elite Philanthropy, SNCC and the Civil Rights Movement.”  In this article, the author discusses how philanthropic organizations played an integral role in determining which African-American organizations succeeded and which organizations failed the 1960s and 1970s.

Over 50 young philanthropists attended and learned from thought leaders:  Pat Pasqual (Foundation Center), Omar Woodard (Venture Philanthropy Partners),  Greg Carr (Howard University, Africana Studies Program), and Raymar Hampshire (SponsorChange).

As always, the Young Philanthropist Dinner was free but guests were asked to donate a book about African-American history or donate in order to create an African-American History reading corner in a school in DCs Ward 8.

What is a Young Philanthropist Dinner?

Young Philanthropist Dinners (YP Dinner) train young people to become effective givers by (a) inviting thought leaders in the nonprofit and social enterprise space to share their philanthropic experiences and (b) challenging young people to use that knowledge to support charitable initiatives.  Young philanthropist dinners are free but guests are invited to donate toward a Capital Cause supported nonprofit initiative.
