RECAP: #YPDinner: How to Make Your Social Enterprise Good

On March 27, 2014, Capital Cause hosted our monthly Young Philanthropist Dinner, “How Your Startup Good: How to Manage, Scale & Grow Your Social Enterprise.”  Speakers from the Department of Small & Local Business Development, The William James Foundation and DC Young Entrepreneurs joined us to share best practices, tips and their personal experiences helping nonprofit founders grow their business with a social good mission.

The event was hosted at the Aspen Institute and nearly 70 young philanthropists and entrepreneurs attended.    A few takeaways from the event included:

  1. Be Good but Innovative  – Determine how your business idea is different from other businesses that may be doing the same work, and how your social good mission will stand out from other similar social enterprises
  2. Be a Planner – Make sure to write your ideas down and determine a timeline.  The DSLBD has resources that support this effort.
  3. Your Team May Change – Unlike established organizations, startups may have to work with several different teams of people who may change as the venture grow.
  4. Know Your Resources – DC nonprofits and government organizations offer many opportunities to support startup nonprofit organizations.
